About the data
This dashboard tracks layoffs across the state using Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification (WARN) notices made available by the Wisconsin Department of Workforce Development. These notices are filed by employers to inform the state of significant layoffs or plant closures.
Under Wisconsin law, most employers with 50 or more employees are required to provide 60 days' notice before a mass layoff or plant closing. This data includes the company name, location, industry, and the total number of workers impacted, searchable by year, county and industry.
User guide
- Darker shades of blue represent higher numbers of layoffs per 1,000 workers, either between 2018 and 2026 or in a selected year. The labor force population estimate used to calculate per capita figures varies from year to year; 2026 figures reflect a 2025 labor force population estimate.
- The employer search bar filters the layoff table in the sidebar and returns circles on the map marking each county impacted by layoffs involving matching employers. Circles are scaled to reflect the number of workers laid off by a given employer in each county; for multi-county layoffs, circle size reflects the total number of impacted workers divided evenly across all impacted counties.
