Why should voters elect you?
I am running for increased state funding for our public schools, an end to the voucher system, and lower property taxes. I am running for rural revitalization, including family farms, health care, main street, and housing. I'm running for my fully funded childcare solution which requires only the wealthy to reimburse the state for childcare services provided, without creating a new bureaucracy.
What is the top issue in your district? How would you address it?
Property taxes have increased in double digits in each of the last two years largely because of reduced funding from the Republican-led legislature. Property taxes are paid by homeowners and renters. State funding has fallen short for 17 years while Republicans have held the majority and caused many school districts to go to referendum for necessary funding, adding insult to injury. I’d introduce or support a bill that restores the two-thirds state funding requirement passed in 1996. I’d introduce or support a bill ending the voucher system. The state cannot afford to fund two school systems. These actions would significantly reduce property taxes, which are not based on income or ability to pay and can result in people losing their homes and landlords raising rents.
How should Wisconsin government operate differently than in the past?
The greatest change for good would be exclusive public funding for elections. Candidates are lured into supporting causes that they may not entirely believe in due to the possibility of a campaign donation and endorsement. Once elected, large contributors hold considerable sway in influencing how a legislator will vote while dangling the prospect of financial support for the next election. State-only funding would free candidates to appeal only to the voters and to be answerable only to the voters.
