Why should voters elect you?
In my first term, I have prioritized the needs and interests of my constituents. I’ve fought for people's freedoms, introducing a state constitutional amendment to guarantee an individual right to privacy. I authored legislation giving Wisconsin residents the ability to sue in state court when government officials violate their constitutional rights. I’ve supported a pro-consumer policy agenda, authoring a bill requiring a disclosure to consumers of any tariff taxes they pay along with a bill to require hemp-derived THC products be kept out of the hands of children. I support a public health insurance option and a requirement that health insurance cover the cost of prosthetics for those with limb differences. Finally, I’ve supported legislation to protect our state's environment, including supporting renewable, green energy.
What is the top issue in your district? How would you address it?
Property taxes and the state's share of funding for schools and municipalities which are the same issue. The state has failed to return its fair share of revenue back to schools and municipalities which in turn has caused property taxes to skyrocket. I have co-authored legislation to address this issue to fully fund schools and reduce property taxes.
How should Wisconsin government operate differently than in the past?
The government must be by the people, for the people. In other words, the state needs to begin again to serve the interests of working families and the average person. Under the past fifteen years of Republicans legislative control, specials interests and their agenda have reigned supreme. The state has taken income and sales tax revenue raised from us and given it away in the form of special interest tax breaks instead of returning it back to pay for our schools and police. While that's great for large companies and the wealthy, its making life unaffordable for everyone else. We need to reform the state's fiscal policy to support working families and fund childcare and schools all while putting a lid on property taxes.
What is your favorite fun Wisconsin history fact?
Despite being a new state at the time, Wisconsin played an outsized role in the Civil War on the behalf of the Union. Wisconsin's soldiers fought bravely and made significant contributions to the war's effort. Wisconsin raised 91,379 soldiers for the Union Army and 12,216 men, about 13.4% of total enlistments, were killed in service.
