Q&A with the Candidate
Why should voters elect you?
I love problem-solving and getting things done. This session, I introduced over 20 unique pieces of legislation. Ten of those bills passed the Wisconsin State Assembly, and five were signed into law by the governor. Some of my more notable bills that became law include exempting state income tax for members of the National Guard and Reserves (AB 913), improving school bus safety (SB 391 and SB 392), and enhancing retail theft penalties (AB 89). Some politicians talk a big game about the things they want to do, but never deliver. I get things done.
What is the top issue in your district? How would you address it?
The top issue in my district is affordability. In the past six years, the price of nearly everything has gone up significantly. “Free” money from the federal government during the coronavirus pandemic flooded the economy, and prices of goods and services have skyrocketed since. While this is a federal issue, the state government should not take in more than it needs to. I want hardworking Wisconsinites to keep more of their hard-earned money, because they can do a better job spending it than the state government can. I want to make Wisconsin’s tax code simpler and more competitive with other states. Finally, I want to promote strong families in Wisconsin. The family unit is the best, most efficient, and most effective unit to solve problems.
How should Wisconsin government operate differently than in the past?
Wisconsin state government should increase transparency and accountability to ensure taxpayer dollars are spent as effectively and efficiently as possible. Specifically, the state should implement a system for the timely release of public records and provide the public with easier access to information about how every taxpayer dollar is allocated. Similar to CCAP, Wisconsin could create a searchable online database that allows residents to see which individuals, businesses, or organizations receive state funds, how much they receive, and the purpose of each expenditure. This would promote greater public oversight and help build trust in government spending decisions.
What is your favorite fun Wisconsin history fact?
I also serve on the Wisconsin Historical Society Board of Curators, and love promoting Wisconsin history! Wisconsin has a rich heritage and strong history. My favorite historical fact is that Wisconsin is home to the birthplace of the Republican Party, at the Little White Schoolhouse in Ripon. This new party’s ideals of ending slavery, promoting individual liberty, and securing economic opportunity without government oppression continue to live on through the policies and platforms of Republican candidates to this day.
