Q&A with the Candidate
Why should voters elect you?
I believe that I am the best candidate to represent the 40th Assembly District because I am committed to being deeply involved in my community and responsive to the needs of my constituents. I first ran for office because I fundamentally care about all of my neighbors, regardless of background, identity, or political persuasion. To be an effective representative, it is essential to engage people of all political persuasions in positive ways and to create spaces where empathy and dialogue can thrive. That is what I focused on in my first term and what I will continue to build on moving forward. I will remain focused on understanding the needs of my District and facing constituent issues head on in pragmatic and effective ways.
What is the top issue in your district? How would you address it?
One of the top issues facing my district is the rising cost of living which has made basic necessities less affordable. Addressing disparities in access to food, healthcare, and housing are all top priorities. I plan to address this by working with my legislative colleagues to meaningful, comprehensive relief to our communities because these issues are not isolated to one district. There are many programs that have already been in development that would have a high impact on both consumers and local industries. For example, food insecurity could be addressed through programs like Farm to Fork and Healthy School Meals for All which would support local agricultural producers and lower grocery bills at the same time.
How should Wisconsin government operate differently than in the past?
There are several ways that the Wisconsin government should operate differently which would make the Legislature more effective and responsive to the needs of people across the state. Specifically, the legislature needs to be more collaborative and bipartisan throughout the entire legislative process. At a time when the state is facing a myriad of complex issues, Wisconsinites deserve legislators that work hard for them and thoughtful legislation that improves lives. Instead, Wisconsin’s full-time legislature rarely meets and when we do, Democratic bills are never allowed to come to the floor. Next session, the Legislature needs to meet more often and hear a wider range of perspectives if we are going to meet the needs of Wisconsin.
What is your favorite fun Wisconsin history fact?
Baraboo is known as the “Circus City,” not only because the Ringling Brothers called Baraboo home, but because many other circuses started in Baraboo as well! At its peak, Baraboo was home to 11 circuses.
